Protect your home during cold weather
01/22/2013
The Public Works Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform residents that special care should be taken to protect their homes during the cold weather.
Periodically check water pipes to prevent them from freezing, especially if your home has no basement. If your pipes are not insulated, let a tap drip to ensure continuous water movement.
Make certain that you have sufficient fuel for heating (wood, oil, propane, etc.) and proper ventilation of all alternate heating sources (stove pipes, air vents).
In addition, be sure to check on elders you know who live alone or on neighbors with limited mobility. Ensure they are comfortable at all times and that their water pipes and heating sources are looked after.
Please note that if your pipes freeze or your basement floods, this is your responsibility. Please prevent this from happening.
