Membership Law - No consensus reached on first question, second Consultation Tuesday
01/25/2013
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to remind Kahnawa’kehró:non that the second Community Consultation for possible amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law will be held on Tuesday, 29 Tsothohrkó:wa/January.
The first Consultation was held last night with approximately twenty community members in attendance. Time expired before consensus could be reached on the first question, which asked whether or not the law should use the Community Decision Making Process (CDMP) in order to be amended. As indicated previously, the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law can only be amended with the direct participation of the Council of Elders – a body that has been suspended since 2007. All other laws use the CDMP to be amended.
Should the first question reach consensus on Tuesday, the second question will follow, asking whether or not the community wishes to make amendments to the law. If there is a consensus to do so, the community will then be asked to decide on the scope, purpose and intent of possible amendments.
The Consultations will be conducted at the Karonhianónhnha Gymnasium. The session begins at 6pm sharp and will conclude at 8:30pm.
