Community Warning - abnormal ice conditions
01/30/2013
The Community Protection Unit has been notified that there are several areas in the seaway where the water has not frozen, in comparison to other years. Although this anomaly is believed to be the result of underwater currents, the exact reason is not known.
Usually, there are several identified areas that rarely freeze due to currents and structures and the thickness of the ice is either unknown or suspect. These areas should be avoided at all times, including sections under the bridge to the island and under the train bridge.
Given the above, coupled with fluctuations in the temperatures, the Community Protection Unit is advising community members to be cautious and not go onto the ice.
Further, at no time do we suggest anyone go onto the ice for any reason in any area of Kahnawà:ke. This activity is done at your own risk. If children are seen playing on the ice they should be called off for their safety.
If there are any questions or concerns, please call the Community Protection Unit at (450) 632-0635.
