Membership Law Amendments meeting draws approximately 35 community members, next date set
03/01/2013
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that the third Community Consultation on amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law was attended by approximately 35 community members. The meeting, which utilized the Community Decision Making Process, was held at the Karonhianónhnha School Gymnasium.
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s Membership Department presented a suggested list of potential amendments, which was the basis for deliberations/discussions. The specific item discussed last evening was the criteria for Membership. Consensus was not reached on the amendments and the meeting will continue where it left off at the next Consultation, which has been scheduled for 6pm to 8:30pm on Thursday, 21 Enniskó:wa/March at Karonhianónhnha.
Once consensus is reached on amendments, a working group that includes community representatives will be created and the process for drafting the actual amendments will begin.
“Despite the fact that the Membership Law elicits a great deal of emotion, I am happy to report that people were calm and the meeting went very smoothly,” said KLCC Coordinator Kahente Horn-Miller. “Participants were pleased that they had the opportunity to contribute to the discussion in a forum that encourages respectful dialogue – as it should be.”
Relevant documents and information are available at the Membership Office, located at the Social Development Unit at the Services Complex.
