Membership Law Amendments meeting draws approximately fifty people

03/22/2013

The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that the fourth Community Consultation on amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law drew approximately fifty people to the Karonhianónhnha School Gymnasium.

“The focus was the criteria for Membership and, though consensus was not reached, the discussions were lively, engaging and respectful,” said KLCC Coordinator Kahente Horn-Miller. “As this part of the law is the main focus for many people, we could see that the participants really wanted to get it right, which we expected.”

“While the discussion was positive, we have to acknowledge that progress is slower than some people would like, but we have the obligation to ensure all voices are heard,” she concluded.

A date for the next Consultation meeting will be announced shortly.

Community members are urged to read the relevant documents and information, which are available at the Membership Office, located at the Social Development Unit at the Services Complex. Additionally, people are urged to contact the Membership Registrar directly or visit www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com, the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission website.
