MCK supports Best Management Practices to help protect water habitats

04/10/2013

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that it has passed a Mohawk Council Executive Directive that supports the Best Management Practices for Activities Taking Place In and Around Water Habitats in Kahnawàke and Tioweróton (Best Management Practices) which will be used as a guideline to protect water habitats during maintenance, development and other activities in or near water.

It was passed unanimously at the Council Meeting held on Monday, 8 Onerahtókha-April.

The Best Management Practices document was developed by the Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office after a series of meetings with MCK Council Chiefs, Capital Unit and Public Works, as well as community presentations and consultations.

“We felt it was appropriate for the MCK to act as a role model in this regard,” said Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. “We are committing to applying these guidelines to the best of the MCK’s technical and financial capabilities. We’d like to thank the Environment Protection Office staff for their good work, which is consistent with our concern for Mother Earth.”

The Best Management Practices will also give residents a resource to consult when evaluating potential works on their properties.

The Environment Protection Office has committed to carry out education about the Best Management Practices and will continue to update the document as new information becomes available. The document will be made available for viewing and downloading at www.kahnawake.com.
