Chief Lloyd Phillips - AFNQL chiefs to meet with Quebec Public Security Minister
04/17/2013
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform the community that Chief Lloyd Phillips, along with the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador, will meet with Quebec Public Security Minister Stéphane Bergeron today in Quebec City.
The meeting is being called to address the difficulties occurring in regard to the renegotiation of Native policing agreements.
“There are very serious concerns over the uncertainty of these agreements,” said Chief Phillips. “The difficulties that the federal and provincial governments are having in working together are having a direct and very negative impact on policing. This, combined with other issues including the chronic underfunding of Native police services, puts us in an unacceptable situation.”
“While Kahnawà:ke is in a different situation than other Quebec Native police forces, if these issues are not resolved it could eventually have negative impact on our Peacekeepers,” he concluded.
The goal of today’s meeting is to attempt to have the Minister commit formally and immediately in working in an open and effective collaboration with chiefs and the federal government to improve policing services.
