MCK plans intervention re Enbridge project
04/19/2013
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that it has filed an application today to the National Energy Board (NEB) regarding Enbridge’s “Line 9B Reversal and Line 9 Capacity Expansion project.” As an intervener the MCK would make presentations to the NEB on its concerns regarding the proposed project.
This hearing will determine whether approval should be granted to Enbridge in order to reverse flow of a 639 kilometer section of pipeline from North Westover, Ontario to Montreal. Enbridge is also requesting authorization to increase the capacity of the pipeline to transport 300,000 barrels per day (from 240,000) and to allow for the transportation of heavy crude oil.
“The MCK has concerns regarding safety, security, contingency planning and any potential negative impacts that the proposed project may have on our environment,” said Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. “As such, we felt it necessary to take the proper steps to ensure our voice is heard.”
The National Energy Board will review the application and determine whether to grant the MCK intervener status.
