Membership Law amendments meeting goes into overtime - additional meeting to be scheduled before summer break
06/27/2013
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to inform the community on the results of last evening′s 12th Community Consultation for amendments to the Kahnawake Membership Law, which centered on the topic of Suspension or Revocation of Membership Benefits and Services.
Group 1 & 2′s (combined) presentation indicated that the suspension of members upon marriage or common-law relationships with a non-Indigenous person should remain in the law. Additionally, that any one member, rather than ten, can make a petition to have an individual’s membership suspended or revoked. Further, they presented proposals for a separate body (from the MCK) that would hear these issues.
The meeting concluded at 8:50pm without Group 3 having a chance to discuss and respond to the presentation.
Therefore, it was agreed by all participants that an additional meeting will be held shortly in order to complete this task.
A date will be announced shortly.
