Membership Law meeting recap
07/11/2013
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to inform the community that the Community Consultations for Amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law are now on summer hiatus following the conclusion of last evening’s meeting.
In that meeting, attended by approximately a dozen participants and observers, Group 3 reached preliminary consensus and accepted the June 26th proposals from the combined Group 1 & 2 on maintaining the provision for suspension and revocation of a Member upon marriage or Common- law marriage to a non-Indigenous person.
Group 3 will present the results of their discussions, such as their recommendation to develop clearer definitions for ‘Common-law,’ once the Community Consultations resume in the fall. If Group 3’s recommendations are accepted, final consensus on this topic can be declared and the next question can be presented for discussion.
The minutes for last night’s Community Consultation will be made available for viewing on www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com in the near future.
