Environment Protection Office needs community input
07/18/2013
The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) is requesting community input on the proposed Enbridge Line 9B pipeline reversal. This pipeline is located between Westover (near Hamilton, ON) and Montreal and traverses traditional Mohawk lands (see map below). The reversal will involve changing the flow direction towards Montreal, increasing the amount of oil being transported and changing the type of oil that is transported to diluted bitumen from Western Canada.
The proposal is currently being scrutinized through a public process overseen by the National Energy Board. The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke has intervener status at this hearing, meaning we can provide our position on the proposal and outline the potential impacts that the project may have on the community, our lands and the environment.
KEPO is looking for community feedback on the proposal in general as well as information on locations close to the pipeline that are used for traditional hunting, fishing or gathering purposes. We would like to demonstrate that the area near the pipeline is being used for traditional activities using concrete examples from the community. Your contributions will help us make a strong case in front of the board concerning the possible negative impacts of this project.
For more information or to provide comments please contact Holly McComber at the Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office at 450-635-0600 or environment.protection@mck.ca before Tuesday, July 30, 2013.
