Equipment failure at Sports Complex
09/23/2013
The Sports & Recreation Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to update the community on the recent cancellations of ice time due to equipment malfunction at the Sports Complex.
There have been ongoing issues with the system where one of the two compressors that keep the ice frozen is failing. While a single compressor keeps the ice frozen it is not strong enough to freeze any water that is added by the Zamboni.
"The ice didn′t actually melt," said Bryan Deer, Director of the Sports & Recreation Unit. "The problem is that the water won′t freeze fast enough to keep up with hourly Zamboni cleanings necessary to keep up with demands for the ice."
A meeting was held this afternoon with representatives from the company that installed the compressor/computer system in order to determine the cause of the malfunction and how to mitigate the situation.
In order to avoid losing the ice completely, the ice surface will be closed until further notice. The community will be informed as soon as the situation is rectified and business returns to normal.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience throughout this temporary closure. The arena building will remain open for walkers and runners.
