MCK to present at National Energy Board hearings re Enbridge pipeline proposal

10/08/2013

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips, along with representatives from the Environment Protection Office and MCK Legal Services, will make a presentation at the National Energy Board hearings tomorrow (Wednesday). The MCK has not yet been made aware of the exact time of the presentation.

The hearings are being conducted in regard to Enbridge, Inc.’s proposal to reverse and increase the flow of crude oil through its Line 9B running between Westover, Ontario and Montreal.

The MCK applied for, and was granted, intervener status in order to ensure that the integrity of Aboriginal title lands and the exercise of Aboriginal rights are not compromised by an approval that this project may receive.

“We are aware that the Draft Potential Conditions for approval currently suggested by the National Energy Board don’t contain any firm obligations with regard to ongoing consultation and engagement with First Nations – that’s something we will address,” said Chief Phillips. “We also want assurances that the Board doesn’t provide approval for a project in a manner that compromises safety on any level, especially in terms of the environment.”

“In short, we want to make sure that the National Energy Board and Enbridge hear our voices – loud and clear,” he concluded.
