10/11/2013
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that proposals to amend the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law (“the Law” or “Membership Law”) will be brought to the Community Decision Making Process when sessions for that purpose resume on Tuesday, 22 Seskéha/October.
The MCK’s Membership Department, along with Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer will sponsor: 1. A presentation of the statistics on the difference between Canada’s federal list and the Membership Law criteria for the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry 2. A summary of the consensus reached by the groups from the sessions held from January to July 2013 3. Proposals to amend the Law for the community to discuss and consider
“Our Law is what protects our community and culture from the thousands of individuals registered by Canada with little connection to the community,” said Chief Sky-Deer. “However, it is clear that the Law has needed amending since the suspension of the Council of Elders in 2007. We need our Members to voice their direction on the Membership Law.”
As has been the norm for the past several months, the meeting will be held from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Karonhianónhnha School gymnasium. Details on the agenda and specific subject matters will be announced in a timely manner.
