Grand Chief responds to Kahnawake-Canada Relations misinformation

10/25/2013

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. has recorded a statement on the MCK’s website responding to certain misinformation that has been circulating on Facebook in regard to the Kahnawà:ke/Canada Relations agreement.

“There is a post circulating that states that any ‘band’ that is “currently sitting at any table having to do with governance issues has agreed to Canada’s terms of reference which ultimately leads to the end of Native status as we know it,” said Grand Chief Delisle.

“Community members need to be reassured that our process is a stand-alone arrangement. The community can rest assured that I would never jeopardize our collective future by signing any such agreement. I take this responsibility very seriously and, as I normally don′t respond to this type of social media, I believe it is important for my community to have the correct information. The Memorandum of Understanding was announced in February 2012 when it was signed and we′ve been transparent on this process since the signing."
