Quebec invites MCK to present at Enbridge hearings
12/03/2013
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Chief Clinton Phillips will be in Quebec City tomorrow (Wednesday) to lead a delegation to present Kahnawà:ke’s position in regard to the proposed extension/reversal of Enbridge’s Line 9B, which runs between Montreal and Westover, Ontario.
The provincial government is holding its own hearings on the controversial project in preparation to formulate its own position on the project, which it has not yet announced. The MCK previously presented its position at the National Energy Board hearings in October of this year.
“Our position remains as it was at the National Energy Board hearings,” said Chief Phillips, who holds the MCK’s Environment Portfolio. “Our concerns regarding the potential environmental risks of this project and our objections to the lack of proper consultations with First Nations will be clearly delivered. We also made a significant number of recommendations.
“Kahnawà:ke has often taken a lead role in expressing its political positions,” he continued. “We’re pleased that Quebec is doing the right thing by requesting our presentation. We will take every opportunity to have our voices heard, especially when it comes to addressing issues that could have an adverse effect on the environment.”
The MCK is scheduled to make its presentation at 12:15pm.
