12/05/2013
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to update the community in regard to the presentation made earlier today by Chief Gina Deer on the issue of tobacco before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights at the House of Commons in Ottawa.
Following her presentation, Chief Deer, along with chiefs from the Mohawk Council of Akwesá:sne, took questions from the Standing Committee. Click here to listen to a recording of the proceedings (large file; allow a few minutes to download).
The presentation was a response to Canada’s C-10 legislation, referred to as the ‘Tackling Contraband Tobacco Act,’ which is a proposed amendment to the Criminal Code “to create a new offense in trafficking in contraband tobacco and to provide for minimum penalties of imprisonment for repeat offenders.”
