News regarding Quebec Sales Tax exemption for Kahnawake
12/18/2013
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce that information concerning point of sale Quebec Sales Tax (QST) exemption for Kahnawa’kehró:non is now online on the Revenue Quebec website.
The information was received earlier today from Revenue Quebec’s Interim Director, Nathalie Pronovost. Full details and links to the Revenue Quebec website are available at www.kahnawake.com/bandcards.
The Agreement on Fiscal Matters Related to Consumer Goods and Services (‘the Agreement’) applies in thirty (30) municipalities in the region surrounding Kahnawà:ke and states that merchants in the specified region “must not collect QST on supplies of corporeal movable property intended for personal use or consumption to Mohawks” who ordinarily live in Kahnawà:ke.
“This is very good news,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “It should be very helpful in clarifying the exemption for merchants who aren’t familiar with the process, which is a challenge we consistently face in terms of the recognition factor, especially at this time of year. We’d like to thank everyone who worked hard to make this happen.”
Details of the process and criteria have not changed since the Agreement was entered into by the Quebec government and the MCK on March 30, 1999. This Agreement introduced special measures regarding purchases of goods.
“What has changed is the fact that Revenue Quebec has made the information easily and readily available to everyone,” said MCK Tax Consultant John Latour. “Kahnawa’kehró:non should take the opportunity to visit the site, make themselves familiar with the documentation and bring copies when shopping in the region.”
Please note that this Agreement is specific to the Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke. Community members are also reminded that PST and GST exemption still applies on all goods and services shipped/ received on Reserve.
