Kahnawake position against federal First Nations Education Act approved at public meeting
12/19/2013
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the public that a position against Canada’s proposed First Nations Education Act (FNEA) was approved last evening at a Community Assembly called by the Kahnawà:ke Education Working Group, and held at the Karonhianónhnha School gymnasium.
The Kahnawà:ke Position on the First Nations Education Act was presented, discussed and passed by consensus. The Kahnawà:ke position was drafted by the Working Group, which consists of educators, administrators, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, the Kahnawake Combined Schools Committee, the Mohawk Nation at Kahnawake and other representatives.
Community members are asked to support the collective Kahnawà:ke position by signing the statement at the Education Center or at various locations in the community (to be announced). Once this is completed, the document will be sent to the appropriate Canadian government authorities, Indigenous communities, regional education groups, and regional and national Indigenous political bodies next month.
“The key point of the document is that the community is collectively rejecting the imposition of the FNEA,” said Education Portfolio Chief Rhonda Kirby. “It’s simple: we don’t need it, and we don’t want it, and we won’t allow Canada to impose it.”
