MCK reiterates opposition to forestry project near Tioweroton

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that it has sent an affidavit to Quebec Superior Court that reiterates its support for the opposition to a forestry project planned for the region close to Tioweró:ton.
The Town of St. Lucie, which neighbors Tioweró:ton, has taken a strong position against the project at Mt. Kaaikop. St. Lucie approached the MCK last fall to lend support to those opposed, which Chief & Council agreed to on 25, Kenténha/October 2013.
“We were only made aware of the logging project by officials and citizens of St. Lucie,” said Chief Gina Deer, who signed the original support letter as well as today’s affidavit. “There was consultation with the Attikamekw at Manawan and Anishnabe at Kitigan Zibi but, interestingly, no one ever approached us.”
“Tioweró:ton is, for the most part, in pristine condition,” added Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. “This project may have some negative effects on our Territory. We are obligated to protect our Territory so that future generations can continue to enjoy what we enjoy today.”
