Chief Gina Deer to meet logging company officials regarding Mt. Kaaikop forestry project
01/27/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that Chief Gina Deer will be meeting this afternoon with officials from Group Crête, a forestry company that is involved in a logging project planned for Mt. Kaaikop.
Mt. Kaaikop is located near St. Lucie, Quebec, which is the town adjacent to the Tioweró:ton Territory. Officials in Ste. Lucie are trying to delay the project, as they have serious concerns about the possibility of clear-cutting rather than selective logging. As indicated last week, the MCK agreed to lend support to those in opposition last fall and delivered an affidavit to Quebec Superior Court last week reiterating its position.
Chief Deer said that today’s meeting is an exercise in information gathering, and is not a consultation. “The fact that we weren’t consulted to begin with has caused us some concern,” said Chief Deer. “We decided to ask questions directly to company officials which, hopefully, will give us a clearer snapshot of the project and help us determine our next steps.”
