Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law Community Consultation next Tuesday
03/19/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to remind the community that the Community Consultation to discuss the draft proposed amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law will take place on Tuesday, 25, Enniskó:wa/March 2014, from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Golden Age Club.
The meeting will be a continuation of the previous Community Consultation held last November, at which there was no consensus on the question of whether the so-called “fifty percent clause” should remain in the law as an eligibility requirement for candidates for Chief & Council.
An informal survey conducted on 13 & 14, Enniskó:wa/March on the issue was inconclusive. It was held for information purposes only as all decisions are actually made during the Community Decision Making Process.
“We were hoping to get a clear sense of the community’s opinion in the matter,” said Trina C. Diabo, the MCK Technician working on the proposed amendments. “We’ve gotten the sense that there is an increase in the number of people who feel that the requirements in the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law should be consistent with requirements set out in the Kahnawa:ke Membership Law. However, the clear majority of people who participated in the survey still feel that the fifty percent requirement should remain at this time.”
The Membership Law itself is in the midst of the amendment process.
Those planning to participate in the Community Consultation are asked to review the current draft and feedback report, both of which are available at the MCK main office, or online at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.
