Consensus reached on fifty percent eligibility requirement for MCK Election Law - Next week 9 or 12 Chiefs
03/26/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that consensus was reached to maintain the so-called ‘fifty percent’ requirement to be eligible to run for Chief or Council Chief in MCK elections.
The consensus was reached after two-and-a-half hours of discussion using the Community Decision Making Process. Approximately twenty people participated to discuss the first draft of proposed amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law.
Those in attendance sat in two groups. Group #1 came to consensus within twenty minutes, while Group #2 used the rest of the meeting to reach consensus. Final consensus was declared at 8:30pm, at which time the meeting concluded. A formal recap of the meeting will be posted on the www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com website as soon as it is completed.
The next issue to be discussed is whether to reduce the number of elected Chiefs to nine, keep the current twelve or look at other options. That meeting has been scheduled for this coming Tuesday, 1 Onerahtókha/April, 2014 at the Golden Age Club from 6pm to 8:30pm.
