03/26/2014
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (“the Commission”) wishes to inform the community that it has received a formal submission for a law to regulate tobacco within the Territory using the Community Decision Making Process.
The submission letter, signed by several community members, was received yesterday. The request is now being processed by the Commission. The request has been sent to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s Legal Services, the body that is responsible to recommend the Categorization of the proposal. There are currently two ways of proceeding: Type I (laws of general application) or Type II (laws that are regulatory in nature). Once Legal Services provides its analysis and recommendations it will go to Chief & Council, who may agree or review it and provide a substantiated objection.
More details will be released to the community as the process unfolds.
