Consensus reached on principles of the Kahnawą:ke Family Homes Law

05/28/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that consensus was reached on the key features or principles of the proposed Kahnawą:ke Family Homes & Matrimonial Interests Law (KFHL) at the first hearing last night. Approximately 20 members including technicians were in attendance.

Participants were supportive to have the draft move forward through the urgent law making process, with minor changes. Upon completion, the draft will be available to the community for a 30 day review period.

“The community is determined to move this law forward,” said portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. “Although the draft is very technical, everyone was well informed and provided valuable feedback on what the new law should look like.”

The proposed law is a ‘stop measure’ to Canada’s Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Legislation being imposed on Kahnawą:ke.

The next steps in the process will be announced shortly.
