Communications tower for essential services
05/29/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform the community of a project between Justice Services, the Kahnawake Peacekeepers and the Community Protection Unit which will see the installation of a new communications tower to be used primarily for essential (Peacekeepers, Fire Brigade, Public Works, Capital and Medical Transport) services.
The tower will be 56 metres (180 feet) in height and be installed next to the Kahnawake Peacekeepers building. A tower of this size will provide radio coverage for the entire Territories of Kahnawà:ke and Tioweró:ton, fulfilling the communication needs of essential emergency services for the community.
“The existing antenna installations are outdated and do not fully meet the needs of the community,” said Director of Public Safety Arnold Lazare. “Communicating without the technical worry of old equipment allows us to focus on our jobs, and that’s making sure our community is safe.”
The tower will comply with health standards outlined by the Health and Safety Department of Health Canada and as part of the process, Industry Canada requires a thirty (30) day consultation period allowing residents the opportunity to share their concerns over radio broadcast waves.
Additional details on the project and information on how to provide feedback can be found online at www.kahnawake.com .
The thirty (30) day consultation period ends Friday, June 27th at midnight.
