Last chance to amend Election Law before summer break
06/17/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to remind Kahnawa’kehró:non that Wednesday’s hearing for proposed amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law will be the last opportunity to participate in meetings on this topic until the fall. This week’s meeting was rescheduled due to the cancellation of the June 11th hearing due to low attendance.
The agenda will remain the same, with discussions needed on proposed amendments on the number of chiefs; disclosure of candidates private business holdings; wording changes to clarify eligibility requirement in the event that a candidate was removed from office in previous term; prohibition of partisan election advertising at polling station; prohibition of fundraising at polling station and grounds that surround the premises; creation of an independent Pre-Election Decisions and Review Board.
“As I stated last week, there is a tight timeline if people want to see amendments implemented in time for the 2015 elections,” said MCK technician Trina C. Diabo, who has been coordinating the file. “It’s a full agenda and the meeting will have to be run very efficiently if we expecting a mandate to move forward.”
The hearing will take place from 6pm to 8:30pm this Wednesday, 18, Ohiarí:ha/June 2014, at the Golden Age Club.
