KLCC Coordinator takes leave to accept prestigious academic opportunity

06/17/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke is pleased to announce that Kahente Horn-Miller has been granted a one year leave of absence from her position as Coordinator for the Kahnaw:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) to accept an important education opportunity.

Ms. Horn-Miller, who holds a Doctorate from Concordia and teaches at the university, will begin her new position as New Sun Visiting Aboriginal Scholar at Ottawas Carleton University in July. The position forms part of Carletons Aboriginal Academic Initiative to increase the presence of Aboriginal faculty and students on campus, as well as to expand the Aboriginal content of their curriculum. The position involves teaching, mentoring Aboriginal students and continuing research in her areas of interest.

This is a wonderful opportunity for me as an Indigenous scholar, said Horn-Miller. I have always viewed my education and knowledge as something that I give back to the community. During the year, I will remain tied to Kahnaw:ke while stepping outside the KLCC and Community Decision Making Process (CDMP), which will allow me to examine it in greater detail as I continue to research on Kahnaw:ke governance. I see this as a benefit not only to myself but to the community at large.

The position of Coordinator will not be officially filled but, instead, Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer will take on an increased role assisting and supporting the KLCC and CDMP during this time, as she has been involved on the KLCC for several years and is very familiar with its operation. The KLCCs Leslie Skye will take on increased responsibilities and additional administrative help may also be hired.

The temporary changes, which will take effect on 1 Ohiarik:wa/July, have been approved by the KLCC and supported by Chief & Council.
