Mercier Bridge closure postponed, one lane available in each direction Pow-Wow week-end
07/10/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) would like to inform the community that the overnight complete closure of the Mercier Bridge originally scheduled for Saturday, July 12 has been POSTPONED to Saturday, July 19th from 10pm until Sunday morning at 9am.
The closure is necessary to allow for concrete operations in the crossover section between both directions of the bridge.
The MCK and Kahnawake Peacekeepers met with representatives from The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) to discuss details of the planned closure.
During that meeting, the community’s frustration and displeasure of the decision to shut down the bridge during Pow-wow weekend was conveyed, and a request to postpone the closure was demanded. “The Annual Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow-Wow is a major event for Kahnawà:ke to showcase our culture, our songs, our dances, and to welcome people into our community, all in the spirit of unity and friendship,” said Grand Chief Michael Delisle. “I’m pleased that JCCBI was understanding and cooperative once this situation was brought to their attention”.
The Pow-Wow takes place on Saturday and Sunday on Kateri Tekakwitha Island with a social at 7pm Friday. More information can be found on www.kahnawakepowwow.com.
