Lloyd Phillips among four to replace AFNQL Regional Chief until December
08/06/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that Chief Lloyd Phillips has been selected to be part of a committee of four chiefs who will temporarily replace Regional Chief Ghislain Picard (who is currently acting as Interim National Chief for the Assembly of First Nations since the resignation of Shawn Atleo).
The decision was made at the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec & Labrador meetings held yesterday in Montreal. The committee will remain in effect until December, at which time the national body will hold an election for a replacement for Mr. Atleo.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Chiefs as someone who has the experience and ability to take on these responsibilities,” said Chief Phillips. “There still needs to be some discussion on the details of how the committee will operate, but I am certainly up to the challenge.”
“It is important that we remain strong as a regional organization in these trying political times – and nationally as well,” he concluded. “The stronger the national positions are, the better our ability to press harder for what Kahnawà:ke needs.”
The other chiefs on the committee are Terence McBride of Algonquins of Temiscamingue, Gilbert Whiteduck of Kitigan Zibi and Anne Archambault of the Malecites of Viger.
Chief Phillips will maintain his current files with the MCK during this time.
