Updated notice regarding landfill in Kahnawake

08/22/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to clarify certain processes that are to be utilized by community members in relation to landfill.

Limited landfill operations have been in effect for several weeks under the auspices of the Landfill Authority. Notices have been issued clearly indicating that these operations are strictly limited for personal and immediate residential use. Absolutely no large-scale development projects are permitted at this time.

Please note that all requests for landfill must utilize the process to obtain landfill. An application must be made at the Landfill office, which is located above the Skawenniio Library on the Old Malone Highway. The process itself takes only a few minutes.

“This is being done as part of the environmental protections that needed to be put into place,” said Interim Landfill Coordinator Theresa Delisle. “In simple cases such as a person removing earth from an in-ground pool excavation to move to a friend’s home across town, for example, the process is simple and takes only a few minutes. This will help ensure the integrity of our processes.”

“We all share the collective responsibility to make sure the landfill we receive is free from contamination and safe for use,” Ms. Delisle concluded. “We’ll never be able to achieve that if certain people resist doing the right thing. We all need to be part of the solution.”

In all instances, community members are urged and advised to contact Ms. Delisle at 450-632-7500, ext. 2366.
