The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that Chief & Council met today with a high-level official from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs & Northern Development Canada (AANDC) to discuss several issues of importance to the community.
“Today, we gave a tour of the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis to Joe Wild, the new Senior Assistant Deputy Minister of Treaties & Aboriginal Government for AANDC,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “This tour and meeting is an important element in terms of educating officials that give direction on policy and other issues at our discussion tables dealing with governance and our land grievance.”
The meeting agenda includes Lands, Membership, Justice, advisory services and follow up on funding of water and sewer on Route 207, as well as the conclusion of the current Memorandum of Understanding signed on February 16, 2012 by Grand Chief Delisle and the then-Minister of Aboriginal Affairs John Duncan. The Kahnawà:ke/Canada Relations (K/CR) table was created as a high-level forum to discuss issues important to Kahnawà:ke. The topics identified at the time were Lands and Membership. It is not certain at this time whether the K/CR table will continue.
