Grand Chief to visit to Deerfield, Massachusetts

09/25/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform the community that Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. will be in Deerfield, Massachusetts tomorrow (Friday), at the invitation of Deerfield Academy. He will be accompanied by representatives of the Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa (KOR) Cultural Center.

Grand Chief Delisle and the KOR delegation will meet with students from two classes (Religions of the World, Native America). The KOR will discuss culture, language and spiritual traditions. Grand Chief will speak on education engagement, tourism and economic development opportunities.

Students taking the course on Native America will be visiting Kahnawà:ke in mid-October. One student from Kahnawà:ke is currently enrolled at the school.

“We have had an historical relationship with the people of Deerfield going back over 300 years, with a number of Kahnawà:ke families having direct links to the Deerfield Raid of 1704, ” said the Grand Chief. “Because we share so much history, there are some very positive links we could make to encourage more exchanges in terms of education, culture and tourism.”

Grand Chief Delisle will be back in the office on Monday.
