Consultant Undertaking Fish Sampling in Community

10/06/2014

The Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) wishes to inform the community that technicians with Groupe Hemispheres will be in the Recreation Bay area completing field work related to the 2014 Recreation Bay Species at Risk Assessment.

The technicians will be in the field, with a representative from the community, to trap, assess and release fish in their natural habitat. They are scheduled to be in the community from October 7 - 10, 2014, including evening assessments. This survey represents the last of three assessments that have taken place this year.

In addition, a consultant working with Hydrosoft SA will be working in the Recreation Bay between October 8 and 10 to complete a bathymetric survey of the bay. This survey involves using a boat with sonar to characterize the bottom of the Recreation Bay and is an important step towards ultimate remediation.

The goal of this project is to determine the diversity and relative quantities of the fish populations, as well as identify plant species in the area from Onake to the Elders Lodge, and up to the Marina on the southern shore of Kateri Island. This work is part of a larger effort by the Environment Office to characterize the Bay.

Please contact the Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office at 450-635-0600 with any questions.
