Dr. David Suzuki visits Tioweró:ton

10/10/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce that renowned environmental activist, Dr. David Suzuki, will visit the Tioweró:ton Territory on Monday, October 13th to meet with MCK Chiefs and representatives of the Coalition for preserving Mount Kaaikop (“The Coalition”).

Dr. Suzuki will make a stop as part of the “Blue Dot Tour”, using his visit to bring awareness to the effects that development projects bring to the environment.

In 2013, a forestry company announced plans to cut trees around Mount Kaaikop, which is located near the Tioweró:ton Territory. The MCK supported The Coalition to oppose the project, as Kahnawà:ke was not consulted before the forestry company made plans.

“We are honoured to have Dr. Suzuki visit our Territory. I, along with other MCK Chiefs, will provide a welcoming reception,” stated Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. “I’m also very appreciative of the hard work carried out by Chief Gina Deer to make this day happen.”

A formal presentation by Dr. Suzuki, Chief Gina Deer and members of The Coalition will take place at L’Interval (at Mount Kaaikop) at 10:30am, followed by a lunch and afternoon tour of Tioweró:ton.
