MCK supports two First Nations requesting mining moratorium
10/28/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that Chief & Council have sent a Letter of Support to the First Nations of Eagle Village and Wolf Lake, who have requested a moratorium on a major project involving the mining of uranium and other rare earth elements within their traditional lands.
“The MCK has been made aware of this situation and is sending this Letter of Support as a show of solidarity with Eagle Village and Wolf Lake,” said Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. “They are asking that Matamec’s rare earths project must not occur without the Free, Prior and Informed Consent of the affected First Nations, which has not happened.”
The letter is attached in the PDF.
Eagle Village and Wolf Lake are neighboring Algonquin communities located close to the Ottawa River in western Quebec in the Temiscamingue region.
