Canada C-10 Anti-Contraband Tobacco legislation receives Royal Assent
11/07/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Canada’s C-10 ‘Anti-Contraband Tobacco’ legislation received Royal Assent on Wednesday, 5 Kentenhkó:wa/November 2014, which means it has passed all of the legislative procedures necessary before it comes into effect.
“This is no surprise to Kahnawà:ke,” said Tobacco Portfolio Chief Gina Deer. “We have informed the community throughout this process and have worked tirelessly to convince the government that this is not the way to go to find solutions to the issues involving the tobacco industry.”
“At this time we’d like to assure everyone that, though C-10 has been given Royal Assent, we will continue to do everything in our power to combat the criminalization of the industry,” she continued. “We’re still in the process of creating a law to regulate the industry in Kahnawà:ke. Hopefully, with the cooperation we’ve been seeing in the past several months, we’ll soon be able to move forward with the law.”
“The longstanding political position regarding tobacco in our community will not change due to C-10,” she concluded.
