Seigneury of Sault St. Louis community consultations set to begin
11/13/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to announce that community consultations on the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis land grievance will officially begin on 2, Tsothóhrha/December 2014.
Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. will give a brief overview on the issue at the Tuesday, 18 Kentenhkó:wa/November Fall Community Meeting.
“This is a significant step in the Seigneury process,” said Grand Chief Delisle. “The time has come to formally consult with the community on what people want in a settlement with respect to Lands. In the past several years, we’ve asked Kahnawa’kehró:non for comments and suggestions through various forums but now we’re asking the specific questions on an official basis.”
“The MCK has developed a website on claims that will be launched shortly. Community members can expect to begin hearing and seeing more information on the consultations in the media and on the website very soon” he added. “The Seigneury land grievance affects everyone in the community, so we need to hear from everyone,” he concluded.
In 1994 the MCK and Canada engaged in a joint process to clarify and resolve the long-standing grievance. In 2003, Kahnawà:ke accepted a formal offer from Canada to negotiate a settlement. Negotiations have been on-going since that time.
