Chief Lloyd Phillips to attend AFN Special Assembly, Kahnawake supports Ghislain Picard for National Chief

12/08/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that Chief Lloyd Phillips will be attending the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Special Chiefs Assembly being called in Winnipeg, Manitoba to elect a new National Chief to replace the departed Shawn Atleo. Atleo resigned on 2, Onerahtókha/May 2014 amid controversy over the proposed First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act.

Chief Phillips will take part as both a representative of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL) and Kahnawà:ke. He has been given the proxy by Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. to vote on Kahnawà:ke’s behalf.

“While the MCK always maintains the right to speak for ourselves on any issue, supporting certain national positions, or in this case a candidate, could help advance our cause,” said Chief Phillips.

Chief & Council are unanimously in support of Interim National Chief Ghislain Picard’s bid for the position. He is currently on leave from his duties as Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Regional Chief.

Chief Phillips will be out of the office all week to participate and will return to the office on Monday, 15 Tsothóhrha/December.
