Kahnawake Membership Law draft amendments enter 30-day Community Feedback Period
12/11/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that the first draft of amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law has entered the 30-day Community Feedback Period. Due to the upcoming Holiday Season, the 30-day period will actually be extended to Friday, 23 Tsothohrkó:wa/January 2015 at 4pm. All feedback must be received by that time.
This is being done in preparation to begin the Hearing Phase (Drafting/Development/Planning) of the Community Decision Making Process planned for early 2015.
The documents are available on the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission website ( www.kahnawakemakingdecisions
). Hard copies of the draft amendments will also be available upon request at the MCK main building reception. Two versions are available: one with tracked changes and one ‘clean’ copy.
Community members are urged to send their comments to the MCK Membership Registrar, Rose-Ann Morris (contact info below). Questions on the amendments can be answered by the Registrar or other Membership Department staff. A general feedback form is available on the website. The comments will be compiled and made available before the Hearings begin.
“The feedback period is essential,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “This will help us assess how accurately the drafting team – which includes community representatives Ramona Stacey-Decaire, Jeremiah Johnson and Arlene Jacobs – captured the direction given by the community over the course of eighteen meetings over fourteen months.”
The mandate to proceed with the proposed amendments was received on 21, Onerahtohkó:wa/May 2014.
