Snow Removal Safety Issues

12/15/2014

The Community Protection Unit in conjunction with the Kahnawake Peacekeepers would like to address a potentially dangerous situation.

The Public Works Department has made it a priority to ensure that sidewalks are cleared for community members to walk safely. Unfortunately, their efforts are being compromised by independent contractors who, in the process of clearing snow from private property block the sidewalks that have been previously cleared.

The result is that pedestrians have no other option but to walk around the snow bank into the already narrowed street and are at a higher risk of being injured.

A similar issue is individuals moving snow into or near a neighbors driveway.

Fortunately, no one has been injured at this point but the hope is that by addressing the issue on a level of respect to fellow community members, this practice will cease.

People acting in a responsible manner will eliminate the need of a formal process to be developed.

Persons wanting to report incidents or wishing further information can contact the Community Protection Unit at 450-632-0635.
