12/17/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that Chiefs Gina Deer and Bobby Patton will be attending a meeting in Ottawa being organized by the Iroquois Caucus on Friday as part of the ongoing actions to combat Canada’s C-10 ‘Anti-Contraband Tobacco’ legislation.
Chief Deer is the Portfolio Chief on the tobacco file, while Chief Patton is one of the organizers on behalf of the Iroquois Caucus.
“We will continue to do everything in our power to fight Canada’s criminalization of our participation in an industry that our people have every right to be part of,” said Chief Deer. “As part of our strategy we are going to speak to a major law firm to discuss some of the options that are available to us.”
“No firm has been engaged to defend our interests at this time,” Chief Deer added. “But it’s obvious to everyone that we cannot sit still and wait for things to happen. There’s too much at stake.”
