Tobacco Strategy Meeting in Ottawa - Looking for Industry participation
01/08/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform the community that the Iroquois Caucus will be holding a special meeting in Ottawa on Thursday, January 22nd to discuss the Tobacco Industry and Canada′s C-10 legislation (venue to be determined).
The Iroquois Caucus has consulted with the Ottawa law firm Gowlings on ways to combat C-10 and representatives from the firm will be on hand to present possible actions that can be taken. All individuals or groups involved in the tobacco industry, as well as concerned community members are invited to take part in order to develop strategies on how to move forward.
"We are reaching out to everyone involved in the tobacco industry because it affects them personally," said Chief Bobby Patton, who sits on the Caucus. "We are looking to garner their support and participation in challenging this law (on behalf of our people) that directly inhibits our inherent right to conduct commerce in the trade and create economic prosperity for our People." A council member from the Listiguj Nation has confirmed their attendance and the Caucus is hoping to have participation from other Nations or communities that share the same concerns.
In order to determine a venue size, those interested in attending are asked to please email Chiefs Bobby Patton (robert.patton@mck.ca) or Gina Deer (gina.deer@mck.ca) or call 450-632-7500 to confirm as soon as possible. The community will be notified once the venue has been determined.
