Vigilance needed at stop signs near Kateri School and KSCS White House
01/22/2015
The Community Protection Unit wishes to inform the motorists that many community members have contacted their offices concerned that there has been an increase in vehicles not fully stopping at the stop signs near Kateri School/Youth Center on River Road and the KSCS White House on Church Road. This situation appears to get more hazardous at the end of the school day when children are leaving school.
It has been reported that there were several incidents where children were almost hit by vehicles failing to stop. Understandably, children leaving school at the end of the day may not be paying full attention to their surroundings, however, it should be noted that these areas are designated as crosswalks giving pedestrians the right of way.
In order to reduce the chance of injuries, the Kahnawake Peacekeepers have already increased surveillance in the area. Additionally, the Youth Center and KSCS White House staff have been assisting by acting as crossing guards. Even with the extra measures, motorists are urgently requested to be extra attentive in this area and other school areas. In the end no one wants any child to be injured, or worse, killed. The Community Protection Unit advocates, "A few seconds of extra vigilance can prevent a lifetime of regret."
