Amendments to Election Law officially passed, will be in effect for upcoming election
03/02/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) are pleased to announce that Chief & Council have accepted the Amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law and have signed a Mohawk Council Resolution today that confirmed the Will of the People and officially enacted the law.
The Resolution was passed by nine out of ten Chiefs present at this morning’s duly-convened Council Meeting. Chief Martin Leborgne objected and did not sign the Resolution and two Chiefs were on vacation.
The proposal to amend the law was brought to the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordination Commission (then known as the ‘Interim Legislative Coordinating Committee’) in 2011. It entered the Community Decision Making Process in February 2012, culminating in the Final Reading on 26, Enníska/February at which formal (and unanimous) approval of the Amendments was achieved.
“We’d like to thank all of the community members who participated in the various meetings during these past three years,” said MCK technician Trina C. Diabo, who administered the project from its inception. “We’d also like to acknowledge the efforts of the former Electoral Officers for their insight, and to the Community Representatives who helped ensure the amendments were a true reflection of the community’s wishes throughout the process.” The Amendments will be in place for the upcoming 2015 Election for Chief & Council.
