Loose dogs a concern in the community

03/17/2015

The Kahnawà:ke Animal Protection Department (KAPD) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform the community that the number of loose dogs in the community is rising and has become a cause for concern.

As mating season begins, dogs are more likely to roam and can often become more aggressive when seeking a mate. Spaying or neutering your dog would help reduce roaming and aggression by preventing the dog from going into heat (spaying) and lessen its need to roam or become more aggressive (neutering).

In accordance with the Animal Control Law, all loose dogs that are picked up by the KAPD will be released upon payment of the following boarding fees:
-    $45 – first offence;
-    $55 – second offence;
-    $65 – third offence; and
-    $15 per night.

After the fourth offence, the animal will be considered surrendered.

Pet owners are urged to ensure that their dogs are securely tied, indoors or fenced in, and are not running loose. Responsible pet ownership would reduce the opportunity that a loose and aggressive dog would have to harm a person or another animal.

Dates for the next set of Spay and Neuter Clinics will be announced in the coming days. If you would like more information concerning spaying and neutering, contact the Animal Protection office at 450-632-0635.
