04/13/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to remind Kahnawa’kehró:non that the First Hearing for proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law begins will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, 14 Onerahtókha/April 2015) from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Karonhianóhnha School. Organizers are urging people to arrive a few minutes early. “There was clear consensus that changes needed to be made to the law to make it more efficient,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “During the Community Consultation phase, it took eighteen (18) meetings to get clarity on the purpose, scope and intent of the original amendments proposed by the MCK’s Membership Department. The community obviously had a lot to say.” The First Hearing will gauge whether the Drafting Team was able to reflect the community’s wishes in the draft law. Tomorrow’s meeting will focus on the Preamble, Purpose and Definitions sections of the draft law, along with recommendations by the Drafting Team. Additional meetings will be scheduled to present subsequent sections of the draft law. All relevant documents are available on the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission website (www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com). Community members planning to attend are strongly urged to view the documents before the meeting(s). Questions on the proposed amendments should be directed to Membership Registrar Rose-Ann Morris or other Membership Department staff.
