04/15/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that there was a substantial turnout at the First Hearing for proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law held last evening at the Karonhianóhnha School. Over 100 participants in two groups participated, with approximately 20 observers also present.
The first three agenda items were completed, with consensus reached by both groups on the draft Preamble; the proposed new Title for the Law (“Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law”); and the Purpose of the Law.
“We were encouraged by both the level of participation and the support for the work that was done on the draft,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “We were also very pleased that people arrived early, so we were able to get right to work with minimal delay.”
A date for the next meeting will be announced shortly. These First Hearing meetings will gauge whether the Drafting Team was able to reflect the community’s wishes in the draft law. All relevant documents are available on the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission website (www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com). In order to better prepare for the meetings, community members are strongly urged to view the documents before the meeting(s). Community members with questions on the proposed amendments should be directed to Membership Registrar Rose-Ann Morris or other Membership Department staff at 450-638-0500.
