04/29/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is reminding Kahnawa’kehró:non that the second meeting for proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law will take place next Wednesday (6, Onerahtohkó:wa/May 2015) from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Karonhianónhnha School.
The current meetings are officially part of the First Hearing, and will gauge whether the Drafting Team was able to reflect the community’s wishes in the draft law. The agenda for next Wednesday’s meeting will include the following:
- Jurisdiction
- Definitions
- The role of the Registrar (time permitting)
“The community seems to be very engaged now, with all the attention the Membership issue has generated in the past year,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “We are now about to get into the more contentious sections over the next several meetings, so it is imperative for people to participate and set the direction for this law, and for our future.”
All relevant documents are available on the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission website ( www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com
). Community members planning to attend are strongly urged to view the documents before the meeting(s). Questions on the proposed amendments should be directed to Membership Registrar Rose-Ann Morris or other Membership Department staff at 450-638-0550.
