Membership Law meeting draws 60 participants
05/07/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that the second meeting for proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law took place last evening with approximately sixty participants in attendance.
Consensus was reached fairly quickly on the issue of Jurisdiction. Consensus was also reached on the first five definitions, though there was no final agreement on the definition of ‘Community Ties.’
It is expected that there will be one more meeting before the summer hiatus. A date and agenda will be announced shortly. “I was very satisfied with the turnout and participation at last night’s meeting,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “The approach we attempted in having the two groups come to consensus on each definition worked well for the first few. However, it became apparent that one group wasn’t comfortable with approving the definitions without having first reviewed the sections of the law to which they applied. This bogged down the process and we don’t want to lose participation because it’s taking too long. We’ll try a new strategy for the next meeting.”
All relevant documents are available on the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission website ( www.kahnawakemakingdecisions
). Questions on the proposed amendments should be directed to Membership Registrar Rose-Ann Morris or other Membership Department staff at 450-638-0500.
